The High power green laser pointers took place in Garland on August 24, 2013, as a DPS chopper flew over a house along the 1100 block of Alexandria Avenue in north Garland. According to a Garland police report, the pilot and tactical flight officer — the latter a Garland officer on loan to DPS — were briefly blinded by a green laser light that filled the cockpit.
The pilot brought the chopper back around and saw three men in the backyard. His co-pilot radioed fellow Garland officers on the ground, who made their way to Chavez’s house and found the trio. They denied everything — at least, until they were told the officers had the whole thing on video, at which point Chavez confessed. Federal law enforcement officers, who say there were 90 laser-pointer incidents in the Dallas division in 2013, took the case from there.
